To mark World Inclusion Day, Ualikhanov University officially inaugurated the Research Laboratory for Inclusive Education and Neurodiversity, reaffirming its commitment to creating an accessible, inclusive, and equitable educational environment.

The newly established laboratory is set to become a key platform for advancing barrier-free education and fostering a strong culture of inclusion both within the university and across the region. The opening ceremony was attended by T.S. Alkhatova, Head of the Akmola Regional Psychological, Medical and Pedagogical Consultation (PMPC); E.S. Musylmanbek, Director of the Akmola Region Chamber of Entrepreneurs; V.L. Shimansky, Head of the Public Association and Rehabilitation Center for Persons with Disabilities “Shans”; and G.T. Kamelinova, Head of the Public Foundation supporting children with special needs and autism “I Walk Independently”.

The primary mission of the laboratory is to integrate academic research, practical initiatives, and partnership-based projects aimed at supporting individuals with special educational needs, as well as to prepare educators, specialists, and employers for effective inclusive practices.

The laboratory’s activities will focus on conducting research in the fields of inclusive education and neurodiversity, developing methodological materials and practical guidelines for educators and professionals, providing academic support and counseling for students with special educational needs, and facilitating the employment of graduates who require adapted working conditions.

Ualikhanov University has been actively advancing inclusive education for many years. Since 2012, the university’s faculty members have been involved in the training of teachers to work with children with special educational needs.

Inclusive support rooms equipped with specialized facilities are available in all university buildings. In 2024–2025, all faculty members completed professional development programs on inclusive education in higher education settings.

The establishment of the Research Laboratory marks a new qualitative stage in the development of inclusive education, bringing together scientific expertise, applied projects, and partnerships with regional civil society organizations, including the Public Foundation “I Walk Independently”, the Rehabilitation Center for Persons with Disabilities “Shans”, the Association of Legal Entities “Union of Persons with Disabilities of the Akmola Region ‘Birlik’”, and other non-governmental organizations.

The opening of the laboratory represents an important step forward for Ualikhanov University in building a truly inclusive society—one in which every individual, regardless of their differences, is empowered to learn, work, and realize their full potential.
