Project summary

Project title

AP27511319 "Development of a Reservoir Project for Collecting Meltwater to Ensure Sustainable Water Supply and Adaptation to Climate Change in the Akmola Region"

Project manager

Yessenzholov Baurzhan

Implementation period

2022-2025y.

Amount of funding

86 870 167 tg.

Topicality

In the northern regions of Kazakhstan, a significant amount of meltwater accumulates in the spring; however, this resource is still not being used efficiently. Each year, a large portion of the meltwater evaporates or flows away through unregulated channels, exacerbating water scarcity during dry periods. Moreover, under changing climate conditions, there is an urgent need to reduce the vulnerability of water resources. These issues can be addressed through the rational use of meltwater resources. For this purpose, a project is being developed to construct a reservoir for collecting meltwater aimed at ensuring a sustainable water supply for the Akmola region under changing climatic conditions, reducing drought risks, and enhancing the region’s adaptive capacity to adverse climate changes. The implementation of this project will help improve the region’s resilience to climate change, enhance the quality of life of the population, and promote the sustainable development of the regional economy.

Objective

Determination of the optimal geographical location of the reservoir that collects melt snow for sustainable water supply of the Akmola region in the context of global climate change, development of its scientific basis, assessment of the impact on the environment

Project outcomes

In the scientific field of the project, 2 (two) articles and/or a review will be published in peer-reviewed scientific journals indexed in the Web of Science (Science Citation Index Expanded) and/or Scopus databases, with a CiteScore percentile of not less than 50 (fifty).

Additionally, 2 (two) articles or a review will be published in domestic or international scientific journals included in the 1st or 2nd list of publications recommended by the Committee for Quality Assurance in Science and Higher Education (CQASHE) of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
