Topicality
Floods on the rivers of Akmola region represent a serious emergency phenomenon that causes social tension and significant damage to both the environment and the economy of the region. Increasing water levels in rivers lead to flooding of agricultural lands, administrative districts and residential houses. Over the last two decades, more than 350 floods of different nature have occurred in Kazakhstan, and about 70% of them were caused by spring floods.
The relevance of this study is due to the fact that in Akmola region there is a high probability of exposure of settlements to the risk of flooding, especially those located near the Esil, Nura and Zhabai rivers. Population growth and active development in coastal zones have significantly increased the risk of flooding, leading to increased social tensions and negative impacts on the environmental and economic spheres.
Various methods of analysis and data collection will be applied in conducting the study. In particular, physical and chemical methods will be used to analyze soil and water, and statistical, hydrological and geographical methods will be used to study flooded areas. Factors affecting the hydrological regime of the Zhabai River during the flood period will be analyzed using data from field observations and geo-information mapping methods. To study the condition of the Zhabai River channel and adjacent areas, aerial photography will be conducted using an unmanned aerial vehicle to obtain high-resolution images with up to 10 centimeters of detail.
Objective
The purpose of this study is to analyze and assess the impact of spring floods on environmental hazard zones in Akmola region and to determine the level of environmental risk and socio-economic sustainability of the region, as well as to develop recommendations to reduce this impact and improve environmental safety management in spring floods.
Project outcomes
Project Outcome: The project will assess the environmental risk of spring floods in the Zhabai River basin and create recommendations for risk mitigation. Physical and chemical analyses of soil and water will be conducted to assess the environmental impact of floods. These data can be used by scientific, research and design organizations engaged in forecasting and prevention of emergency situations.
It is planned to publish 2 (two) articles in journals from the first three quartiles of impact factor in Web of Science database or having CiteScore percentile in Scopus database not less than 50.
Within the framework of the research it is planned to publish a monograph with the title “Management of environmental risks of floods and their prevention on the territory of Akmola region”. An application will be submitted to the Research Institute of Intellectual Property of the Republic of Kazakhstan (NIIP RK) to obtain a copyright certificate for the monograph.
The expected scientific effect includes geo-ecological assessment of water resources and soil conditions in the Zhabai River basin in the areas subject to flooding as a result of spring floods, as well as the creation of maps for modeling the impact of spring floods. This research represents a significant contribution to the development of scientific knowledge in the field of flooded area management.
The social effect of the research is to solve the environmental problems of the region, improve environmental risk management of spring floods and improve the quality of life of the population.
The economic effect is that research on flood assessment and modeling can stimulate the development of new industries related to the provision of technologies, services and solutions for flood risk reduction. This will reduce socio-economic losses associated with flooding of economic facilities, administrative areas and residential houses.
