The course "Introduction to Ecological Risks" is part of the project 585761-EPP-1-2017-1-FI-EPPKA2-CBHE-JP "Enhancing Competencies in Sustainable Waste Management at Universities in Russia and Kazakhstan" / EduEnvi. Registration for the online course will be open from January 17 to March 14, 2021, for master's students, 3rd and 4th-year undergraduate students, and anyone interested in improving their qualifications in this field.

Participants will become familiar with the terminology, classification, and methods of assessing ecological risks; study the regulation of contamination risks from radioactive waste; assess the level of environmental risk posed by waste disposal sites and develop a set of environmental protection measures to mitigate them.

Course Overview:

In Kazakhstan, the majority of waste is sent to landfills for burial. Nearly all of the landfills have reached the end of their operational life and require reclamation, as well as the construction of new regional engineered landfills. What dangers and risks arise when handling waste? What is the methodology for quantitatively determining the environmental risk? What levels of ecological risk are acceptable, and which are not? You will find answers to these and many other questions as you study the course. The key feature of the course is practical tasks based on real examples. The course includes video lectures, reading materials, and practical assignments. After eight weeks, you will be able to assess risks in waste disposal areas.
