Micro-Credentials and Short-Term Educational Programs: A Modern Trend in Education
In the context of a rapidly changing labor market, micro-credentials—short-term educational programs aimed at developing specific professional skills and competencies—are becoming increasingly popular. In 2025, Sh. Ualikhanov Kokshetau University approved the Regulation on the Development and Recognition of Micro-Credential Educational Programs in accordance with Order No. 319 of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan. This document regulates the procedures for developing micro-credential programs, establishes quality standards, and defines recognition mechanisms. Upon completion, learners are awarded certificates or digital badges confirming the acquisition of specific competencies.
Micro-credentials are becoming especially востребованы in Kazakhstan due to the rapid changes in the labor market, the growing importance of lifelong learning, and the strengthening cooperation between universities and employers. Their key advantages are compactness, practical orientation, and flexibility, enabling learners to quickly acquire in-demand competencies, improve their competitiveness, and build individualized educational pathways.
Currently, the university has developed 12 micro-credential educational programs: “STEM Teacher,” “Teaching Assistant,” “Camp Counselor,” “Tourism Instructor,” “HR Legal Consultant,” “Career Guidance Teacher,” “Seed Crop Inspector,” “Sampler,” “Digital Project Manager,” “Mine Surveyor,” “Tractor Operator,” and “1C Programmer”. All programs are implemented in cooperation with specialized organizations and regional employers, ensuring their practical relevance.
In 2026, the “STEM Teacher” program was successfully implemented with the participation of 20 learners. At present, training continues under the “HR Legal Consultant” program, with 13 participants among second- and third-year students majoring in Law.
In November 2025, the university held a conference titled “Regional WorkTech Cluster: Workforce for the Innovative Economy of Akmola Region”, attended by representatives of the business community. As a result of the event, partnership memorandums were signed between the university and several organizations, including Algabas Training and Consulting Center, the Akmola Region Tourism and Recreation Industry Association, Asyl Arman LLP, Altyntau Kokshetau JSC, Zernovaya Industriya-Astana LLP, Wyndham, BURABAY HOTEL MANAGEMENT LLP, and others. This significantly expanded opportunities for practical training and enhanced the effectiveness of micro-credential educational programs.
The university continues to develop micro-credentials as part of its efforts to prepare highly demanded specialists who meet the modern requirements of the labor market.
