Ualikhanov University Becomes Kazakhstan’s First University to Receive OMIR Green Building Certification

Ualikhanov University has become the first higher education institution in Kazakhstan to have its buildings environmentally certified under the national OMIR green building certification system.

In August 2026, the University’s Main Academic Building and three student dormitories successfully completed the certification process. The Main Academic Building received final certification under the “OMIR – Modernized Educational Buildings” standard.

On September 18, Ualikhanov University hosted an official ceremony to present the OMIR certificates and green building labels. The event brought together the University leadership, representatives of the Kazakhstan Green Building Council (KazGBC), faculty, and students.

OMIR is Kazakhstan’s national system for the environmental assessment and certification of buildings, developed by the Kazakhstan Green Building Council (KazGBC). The assessment covers a comprehensive range of criteria, including energy efficiency and climate resilience, water quality and indoor environmental conditions, resource consumption, waste management, safety and accessibility, the environmental condition of surrounding areas, and building management.

Following the audit, the University’s Main Academic Building was found to meet all mandatory requirements of the standard.As part of the ceremony, the OMIR green building label was officially unveiled at the Main Academic Building. Ualikhanov University and KazGBC also signed a Memorandum of Cooperation aimed at advancing green building principles, supporting educational initiatives, and developing joint projects in the field of sustainable development.

The programme also included expert lectures for students and faculty. Alexander Bely, Ph.D., Director of the Kazakhstan Green Building Council, spoke about the role of green buildings in Kazakhstan’s pathway towards carbon neutrality by 2060. Aiman Shopayeva, MSc, Technical Director of KazGBC, addressed the role of universities in moving from energy-efficient buildings towards a more environmentally responsible way of life.

The environmental certification of its buildings marks an important milestone in Ualikhanov University’s systematic transition towards a greener and more sustainable campus. The University continues to improve resource efficiency, develop modern and safe infrastructure, and foster a culture of environmental responsibility across its community. The initiative also contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.

Ualikhanov University is located in the Akmola region, an area distinguished by its extensive forests and lakes. The region is also home to Burabay State National Nature Park, one of Kazakhstan’s significant protected natural areas. In this unique natural setting, becoming a “green university” is more than an infrastructure initiative for Ualikhanov University - it represents a long-term commitment to environmental stewardship, responsible use of resources, and a culture of sustainable development.
